The Three Sisters: a love letter to corn, beans and squash
Long before nutrition labels, our grandmothers understood complete protein. Here is how the Three Sisters feed the soil and the body at once.

Corn climbs, beans bind, squash shades the ground. Planted together, the Three Sisters need less water, resist more pests, and leave the soil richer than they found it. Eaten together, they form a complete protein without a single supplement.
This is the oldest lesson in Afro Indigenous cooking: nothing works alone. A pot of beans wants the sweetness of corn. A squash wants smoke and salt. Reciprocity is not a metaphor here — it is a recipe.
Start simple this week. Simmer dried beans with bay and onion, roast squash until the edges caramelize, and press fresh masa into thin rounds. Serve them on one plate and taste how they finish each other.
